Safe here, on our peninsula

Well as some of you may have seen over the news as of late, Brisbane is having just a couple of issues with regard to the Brisbane River breaking it's banks and inundating a great deal of the surrounding suburbs.

Luckily up on the Redcliffe Peninsula we've copped a little bit of local flash flooding due to rain, but have been fortunate enough to not receive any of the crazy peaks of the Brisbane River or the canals/creeks that run off it.

We returned to work on Thursday for all of about 5 hours before hearing that the Gateway Mwy was starting to go under around Bracken Ridge and that the Deagon Deviation could possibly be in trouble as well, this was well and truly enough to have us get out of there ant retreat to our Peninsula.

It's quite amazing how quiet things are up here, when across the bay not that far away at all Brisbane is experiencing flood's comparable to that of 1974.

We still remain here on our little Peninsula of serenity, unsure of whether the roads into work have gone under or not, it's hard to find reliable info, but we are taking no chances.

On our peninsula we shall remain.

The beginning.

Where did this all begin? Well according to my mother ever since she can remember, as a child I would cry when given a plate of KFC chicken and refuse to eat anything that resembled a part of an animal! So what was the solution? tear the meat into small pieces until it no longer appeared it had come from an animal and I the child would eat it.

Over time it became the norm that I was not fed anything on the bone, and unaware of the origin of my food I contently ate it. Once old enough to fully understand the concept, eating meat had become a matter of habit that was hard to break. And I guess my childhood conscience had worn down, that is until we began to travel.

Travelling through the developing world reignited my awareness of where our food actually comes from, something so many of us have the pleasure of blissfully ignoring. The reality was that if you ordered chicken in your curry tonight, that cute white hen that was contently scratching in the soil outside your room this morning wont be there when the sun rises tomorrow. It reminded me of the feelings I had as a child, being served up a plate of food resembling my favorite pet a hen named Blacky.

Not eating meat whilst away for months at a time wasn't hard at all, in fact I didn't even miss it! But at home eating quite an unhealthy diet generally involved eating meat. And although I had guilty feelings, I was addicted. But with each trip away and those feelings growing stronger I was able to make the transition. Changing our diet has resulted in not only becoming Vegetarians but also in the combined loss of over 50Kg, and an overwhelming sense of peace.

I guess we both thought it would be a lot harder to be Vegetarians and that we would be limited in our choices, the truth was quiet the opposite. We have already tried so many amazing foods, the fact they are guilt free is just an added bonus. This is why we have decided to write this blog, each week we will try new products, eat at different restaurants and cook from new recipes. Sharing with you our experiences not only in writing but also through photography.
